Facial & Body Liposuction
Liposuction is commonly used to remove stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat deposits and to sculpt the body into a slimmer profile. Resistant fat deposits may be an inherited problem, and can cause much angst when they do not respond to lifestyle modifications. Areas we treat are the abdomen, back, love handles, thighs, neck and arms.
There are several different forms of liposuction, but in our Vancouver office, we use the tumescent technique. There are several advantages to this method. The tumescent technique utilizes large volumes of natural saline (lightly salted water) solution, containing a precise amount of a very dilute local anesthetic (lidocaine), and adrenaline, which is dispersed into the fatty tissue. The injected area then becomes locally anesthetized— or "numbed." The patient is now very comfortable during the procedure.
After tumescent liposuction surgery, many patients may get up and walk out of the office without assistance. Most patients are usually back to their regular routine in a couple of days. With the tumescent technique, postoperative (after surgery) discomfort is usually significantly reduced, since the local anesthesia remains in the treated tissue, usually causing numbness that may last for sixteen hours or more after surgery. Patients frequently require only Extra Strength Tylenol® to control the relatively minor discomfort that may occur after liposuction surgery performed using the tumescent technique.
Another benefit of the tumescent technique is that bleeding and bruising is minimized as a result of the special combination of ingredients. Bruising is one of the most common side effects of having liposuction, so reducing this is helpful for many patients.
In summary, the use of the tumescent technique can minimize bruising and bleeding, and can provide a more rapid recovery, all while using local anesthetic as the major source of pain/discomfort control.
